My ID was wrong – that beautiful bird was either an African Hawk-Eagle or Ayres’s Hawk-Eagle (they look very similar). Thanks to Peter C’s feedback, he is a super birder and spotted the feet which are overly large for a buzzard. With closer examination I think it is the later, an Ayre’s Hawk-Eagle – as it had a small crest. This makes it ‘local and uncommon in forest and riverine woodland.’ Thanks so much Pete. And sorry Dad, who is a huge fan of the buzzard.
(This has gone a small way to convincing Dominik that blogging is a good thing – his latest phrase when he sees me at the keyboard is ‘are you blogging OR living?’ It is rather hard to avoid ‘living’ here!)
